The National Song Vande Mataram, composed in Sanskrit by
Bankimchandra Chatterji, was a source of inspiration to the people in the
struggle for freedom. It has an equal
status with Jana –gana- mana.
It was sung for the first time in the 1896 session of the
INC.
It was taken from the novel ‘ Anand Math ‘ of Bankim Chandra
Chatterjee published in 1882 Its English translation was done by Sri Aurobindo.
