It runs parallel to the Western coast in a N-S direction from Tapi river to kanya-kumari


Average elevation 900-1600 m

Average  width 50 to 80 km

Stands like a continuous wall and can be crossed through passes only

It has structural unity

Source of many large rivers from it

Almost perpendicular to the monsoon and therefore causes rainfall in the west coastal plain



It runs in NE to SW the direction parallel to the eastern coast from Odisha Odisha to the Nilgiri hills
Average elegation 600m

Width varying from 100-200 km

Divided into several parts by large rivers


Structural unity is lacking

No big river originates

It is almost parallel to SW Monsoon coming from the Bay of Bengal and does not cause much rainfall



The Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu lies at  the junction of Eastern & Western Ghats.
